Crystal Palace in the EFL: Remember Paddy McCarthy? Here’s what he’s up to nowadays

Paddy McCarthy enjoyed a reasonably long playing career at Crystal Palace during his time at Selhurst Park.

Being signed by veteran manager Neil Warnock way back in June 2008, and despite making a semi-respectable 27 league appearances in his first season at Palace, was forced to undergo shoulder surgery which ruled him out for a sizeable chunk of the campaign.

Another severe injury during the following term meant he was able to produce just 47 Championship displays in his first two years in the English capital, but seemingly managed to get over these setbacks to become an ever-present figure at the back for the Eagles.

When did Wilfried Zaha make his EFL debut for Crystal Palace?

With this, he played in all but six of his side’s league fixtures during the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons, an impressive total but that was as good as it got for the 38-year-old in terms of his playing days at the club.

Featuring in just one league game for the next two seasons due to a severe groin injury, he was unable to play his part in Palace’s promotion to the Premier League in 2013 and had little chance of forcing his way back into the first team at Selhurst Park because of this and others overtaking him in the pecking order.

Reasonably unsuccessful loan spells at Sheffield United, Bolton Wanderers and Preston North End followed, with knocks continuing to mar his career, eventually being released by the Eagles in 2016 and retiring the same year at the age of 33.

This must have been a major disappointment for the ex-Republic of Ireland international who would have fancied himself to play for a lot longer if it wasn’t for his constant injury troubles.

He hasn’t quit football though, going into coaching instead and securing his UEFA Pro Licence, re-joining Palace as an academy coach the same year he retired and moved up from managing the club’s Under-18s to take charge of the Under-23s in the summer, working alongside Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira and ex-Queens Park Rangers manager Shaun Derry during pre-season before focusing more on the academy.

With the UEFA Pro Licence under his belt, it would be no surprise to see the Irishman promoted to the first team in the near future or fly the nest and try his hand as a senior manager himself.

Derry was promoted from the Under-23s to the first team in the summer, so a closer working relationship with current Palace boss Vieira might not be as far away as it seems if the 38-year-old can follow in a similar path.
