There was a peculiar face in South Wales today, as Cardiff City began their pre-season training in preparation for the 2019/20 campaign.

The Bluebirds have been heavily linked with a move to sign Newport County goalkeeper Joe Day, with current shot-stopper Neil Etheridge attracting interest from the likes of Liverpool and Aston Villa.

Day has been a fantastic servant for the Exiles since his move from Peterborough United nearly five years ago - the 28-year-old has made over 240 appearances for County, establishing himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the lower leagues.

Last season, he was named in the Sky Bet League Two Team of the Season after helping Newport reach the play-off final, and with his contract set to expire at the end of this month, a move away from Rodney Parade looks likely.

Via the BBC, Kenneth Zohore posted a picture of himself in the gym earlier on, but his post has now been deleted, as it looks as if Day was also in the bottom of the picture, hinting that a move could well be on the horizon.

Newport have already signed another goalkeeper in former Millwall man Tom King, as they look to find a replacement for their number one.

The Verdict

It's probably almost inevitable that Cardiff will sign Day from Newport, and this picture also adds fuel to fire.

He is a very, very talented goalkeeper, and he is more than deserving of a step up to the Championship after some very solid seasons in League Two.

It's a good move for him, as he won't really have to relocate too much, and he'd be a perfect replacement for Etheridge if he leaves this summer.
