Sheffield Wednesday will be looking to win promotion back into the Championship at the first time of asking, following the club's relegation from the second tier last term.

They'll have to do that without both Liam Shaw and Osaze Urhoghide though, with both players going on to sign for Scottish side Celtic ahead of the new league campaign when their contracts with the Owls expired.

Speaking in a recent interview with Football Transfer Tavern, former Sheffield Wednesday man Carlton Palmer labelled the departures of Shaw and Urhoghide as 'horrendous', before going to to state that it's 'criminal' for the club to have allowed both players to run down their contracts at Hillsborough.

“It’s horrendous what happened with him and Shaw, both young players who are at the club and have been allowed to basically leave for free.

“I’ve seen a quote from Darren Moore basically saying it’s criminal that these guys were allowed to run their contracts down.

“You’ve got two good young players there who are the future of the club, future money. Surely you don’t let them get down to the last year of their contract?”

Sheffield Wednesday are set to take on Charlton Athletic in their first match of the new League One campaign, which is set to get underway on Saturday 7th August.

The Verdict:

You have to agree with Palmer here.

Sheffield Wednesday have missed out obtaining sizeable transfer fees for the services of both Liam Shaw and Osaze Urhoghide this summer, and that'll be hugely frustrating to see for the club's supporters.

They simply have to get their best upcoming talents onto new contracts much sooner, as they run the risk of them leaving for a minimal fee, or sometimes absolutely nothing.

It would have been a real blow to see them depart this summer, and it's vital that they replace them this summer, as they target promotion back into the Championship at the first time of asking this term.
