Newly-appointed Crawley Town boss Mark Yates is out to prove the doubters wrong, insisting he will be a better manager in his new role.

Yates has belief in his own ability

The 45-year-old was sacked as manager of Cheltenham Town last November after five years at the club, and has used the past six months out of the game to reflect and learn how to improve as a coach.

He was appointed manager of Crawley on Tuesday, and believes that his time spent away from the dugout has helped him to better his game.

"I think Crawley are going to get a better manager than I was at Cheltenham just because of the time I've spent out reflecting and realising that hopefully what made me a decent manager and what can make me an even better one," he told the Crawley News.

"Being a member of the LMA [League Managers' Association] I have been on courses at St George's. They are called LMA Masterclasses and I've been on a few of those.

"I've had a fair few club visits, I've been to Birmingham, Swindon, MK Dons, Millwall and up to Liverpool. I just wanted to get all ends of the spectrum really.

"I just wanted to see how other people do things because nobody knows everything. You never stop learning.

"It's been great for that side of it but the boredom and losing the match day experience has been something that I've seriously missed.

"It's given me time to reflect and think 'maybe I shouldn't have done that' and 'maybe I should have done this slightly differently', but also there were some good things I've done that I thought I'll take that into my next job."
