Coventry face nervous January wait as Barca eye deal

Barcelona are eyeing a January move for Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen after his impressive performances on loan at Coventry City this season, according to Football Insider

The Sky Blues have been one of the Championship’s surprise packages this term and are just one point outside the top six as we approach the halfway point in the season, with Maatsen having missed just one league game since he joined Mark Robins’ squad.

Unfortunately for Coventry, it seems they could be set to lose the 19-year-old when the transfer window opens next month.

Football Insider has reported that Maatsen is on Barcelona’s radar and they’re weighing up making a move in January.

The Dutchman does still have four years left on his deal at Stamford Bridge and is said to be highly rated at the west London club, which may offer the Sky Blues some hope that he won’t be sold in next month’s transfer window.

What club did Coventry City sign each of these 29 players from?

Maatsen joined Chelsea from the PSV Eindhoven academy in 2018 but has featured just once for the senior side – spending the last season and a half away from the club on loan.

The Verdict

Losing Maatsen in January would be a gutting blow for Coventry because the teenager has been really reliable for Robins in the 2021/22 campaign.

With the Sky Blues likely hoping to breathe new life into their play-off push over the festive period, the prospect of losing a regular starter is a concern.

It’s not a great surprise to see Barcelona eyeing the 19-year-old given it is clear to see he has huge potential but he is understood to be rated at Chelsea, which may mean the Premier League club are not willing to let him leave.

With his contract running until 2024, the Stamford Bridge outfit can stand strong if they choose and that would play into the Sky Blues’ hands.

It could be a nervous wait for Coventry in January.
