Chris Stokes is set to leave Coventry City, according to a report by The Coventry Telegraph.

Bury are set to complete the signing of Stokes, who has been seen as surplus to requirements by newly promoted Coventry.

The Sky Blues won promotion to League One via the play-offs with Stokes playing a vital role in their success.

The 27-year-old wrestled back the starting spot from Ryan Haynes and played 34 games for the club, including their play-off final win.

However, Coventry have signed ex-Shrewsbury Town Junior Brown and are currently running the rule over free agent Brandon Mason.

This has led to Haynes joining Shrewsbury and now Stokes looks likely to leave as well with promising youngster Chris Camwell also able to provide cover at left-back.

Bury, who were relegated to League Two last season, look set to win the race for the former Bolton Wanderers academy product.

Stokes will leave Coventry with fond memories, having played nearly 100 games for the club and having won the League Two play-off final and the Checkatrade Trophy final at Wembley during his time with the West Midlands outfit.

The Verdict

Coventry fans will be disappointed by this news and Stokes certainly seems like he would be adequate back-up in League One.

Although he had his limitations going forward, the left-back was solid in defence, decent in the air, always 100 per cent committed to the cause and able to play at centre-half too.

The former Forest Green Rovers defender will be an asset for Bury in their promotion quest.
