Coventry City midfielder Gustavo Hamer has insisted that he has not been close to making a move away from the Sky Blues this summer to either Rangers or West Brom.

It had been reported by the Athletic that West Brom were potentially interested in making a move for Hamer this summer as they aim to bolster their midfield options.

Football League World also revealed back in May that the likes of Norwich City, Brentford and Brighton were also interested in making a potential move for Hamer during the summer transfer window.

While it was also reported Rangers were also in the hunt for him with the Sky Blues thought to be valuing the 24-year-old at around £4 million.

Reports from the Coventry Live though suggested that Coventry had not had any contact with the Scottish champions over a move for him.

Speaking to Voetbal Primeur, Hamer revealed that he has not been close to making a move to either West Brom or Rangers during the summer transfer window. However, he did confess that he could be looking to make the next step in his career next summer.

He said: "I don't know what all of that is true. My girlfriend also said: oh nice that you are going to Rangers for four million. You could have said that to me. They all know more than I do.

"There are all kinds of rumors here, dude. I spoke to supporters recently and they said that I really can't leave and certainly not to West Bromwich Albion. I thought: what are you talking about? Those rumors are going around very fast here. Teammate also made a joke recently: nice that you leave and don't tell that in the group. It said that I had a verbal agreement with Rangers, but I've never spoken to them.

"I do have that ambition and I also think that I can go even higher. Next season I hope to be able to make a step up. If I keep going like this, I should be able to do that too."

The verdict

This is a major positive for Coventry heading into the last few days of the transfer window and these comments would suggest that they are going to be keeping hold of Hamer.

Hamer’s performances for the Sky Blues last season in the Championship were excellent and he played an instrumental role in keeping the club in the English second tier.

The 24-year-old has started this campaign in good form once again. He will be someone that Mark Robins looks to throughout the season to deliver strong performances on a consistent basis.

The likes of West Brom and Rangers would have been attractive propositions for Hamer this summer. However, it appears that neither of those two sides have ever really firmed up their interest in the 24-year-old according to these comments.

Coventry have done well to keep hold of the midfielder this summer, but should he enjoy another strong season in the Championship then they will struggle to do the same next year.

It seems from these comments that Hamer has the mindset to potentially push for a move away from the club and to the next level at the end of the campaign.

That though would of course be dependent on where the Sky Blues have finished in the league this term.
