Coventry City are close to signing Chelsea defender Jake Clarke-Salter on loan for the season, according to Coventry Live.

It has been a fairly busy summer for the Sky Blues, who have already brought in the likes of Ben Sheaf, Martyn Waghorn and Viktor Gyokeres.

Ian Maatsen also arrived on loan from Stamford Bridge last week, and now, another Chelsea player is set to reunite with him.

According to Coventry Live, central defender Jake Clarke-Salter is close to joining the Sky Blues on a season-long loan deal.

Clarke-Salter has spent the last two seasons on loan at Birmingham City, racking up 34 appearances across two loan spells at St. Andrew's.

He struggled to establish himself as a key player last season, though, and a sixth loan move away from Chelsea now looks to be in the offing for the 23-year-old.

Clarke-Salter has previously had loan spells with Bristol Rovers, Sunderland and Vitesse Arnhem, and has made only two senior appearances for Chelsea.

Coventry begin their Championship campaign with a home clash against Nottingham Forest on Sunday afternoon.

The Verdict

I like Clarke-Salter as a player.

I think he is an imposing figure who is commanding in the air, but also comfortable at getting the ball down and playing out from the back.

That would see him fit right into Mark Robins' three-at-the-back system, which places emphasis on the central defenders stepping in and building attacks from the back.

He's still at a good age and will be looking to prove a point after a disappointing loan spell at Blues last season.
