Optimism has been restored at Coventry City as the club head back to League One at the first time of asking.

Many Coventry fans saw promotion for the first time in their lifetime and now they are hoping to head back to the Championship.

But something needs to change systematically for the Sky Blues to ensure progression.

Too often in the past, Coventry have let their best young players leave the club, only for their value to rocket one or two years later.

The most evident example of this in recent times is James Maddison, who Coventry sold for a criminally small fee in January 2016.

At the time, there was no need to sell and Maddison's exit was a real downer on what was a magnificent season up to that point in League One.

The England under-21 international joined Norwich and, of course, he has now moved to Leicester City for about £20m.

Other examples of this include Bournemouth star Callum Wilson and Fulham defender Cyrus Christie.

Coventry simply must avoid a repeat of this when offers inevitably come in for Tom Bayliss this summer.

The 19-year-old has the potential to be anything he wants to be and could even become better than Maddison.

The youngster plays with such maturity despite still being a teenager and his ability to carry the ball forward in midfield, beat defenders with ease, pick passes and score goals is remarkable given his age.

Coventry will receive bids for Bayliss this summer and they must avoid selling him.

The academy product, who has six goals in 31 senior games, could be the key player who earns Coventry back-to-back promotions and if he does, then his price tag will soar to more than double what he is currently worth.
