Tony Mowbray's Coventry City are eager to keep hold of in-form striker Adam Armstrong beyond January

The 18-year-old striker, on loan from Premier League outfit Newcastle United, has scored eight goals in nine games to become the club's leading scorer so far this season, but he is due to return to his parent club in the middle of January.

Sky Blues technical director Mark Venus is understandably eager to extend his loan deal until the summer, and believes remaining at Coventry would greatly benefit Armstrong.

He told the Coventry Telegraph: 'Unless you feel he is going to go back and really, really make a difference, which I find it hard to think Newcastle believe that after spending an awful lot of money on more established strikers, why do you want to test him somewhere else when he’s only 18 and settled somewhere and enjoying his football.'

Newcastle's poor start to the new Premier League season, which leaves them bottom of the division after a winless start, had many Coventry fans worried that the North East side would recall the young striker, particularly with a 24 hour recall clause in his contract.

Yet, Magpies manager Steve McClaren has admitted that remaining at Coventry is best for the player's development, suggesting that it is highly unlikely that the top-flight side will recall the youngster.

Whether it means that he can extend his stay beyond the New Year still remains to be seen though.

Venus added: 'He’s being productive on the football pitch and then you can reassess him in the summer rather than in January. It might upset his whole lifestyle, turn it round and make him wonder why the hell he did it in the first place.

'So I think he has to stay here, unless they really want him, and then he can reassess himself in the summer and look at where and what he does next.'

Armstrong's goals have fired Tony Mowbray's side up to fifth in League One, having picked up six wins and one draw from their opening ten games.

The Sky Blues travel to 23rd placed Fleetwood Town today, looking for another three points to secure their current play-off position.
