Coventry City's late run for a play-off place looked doomed to failure this weekend as other results forced them into ninth, eight points outside the top six.

They drew 0-0 with Bristol Rovers on Sunday, knowing that a win could have moved them to within touching distance of Doncaster Rovers. Instead, the struggling Gas ground out a valuable point of their own, but a damaging one for the Sky Blues.

In further bad news, Mark Robins revealed that key pair David Meyler and Tom Bayliss could be out for the rest of the season, compounding the club's agony.

“It’s a blow,” Robins told the Coventry Telegraph.

“Tom has a broken wrist. We don’t know yet whether he’s going to need a surgical intervention or whether they will cast it, and it be a light cast, I don’t know yet.

“And obviously Dave Meyler went on and popped his shoulder. His AC joint has gone and dropped down. You could see his shoulder that needed put back in and it’s still out, so he’s going to have to go and get that done at hospital I think.”

Meyler is on loan from Reading and although Robins' reveals he'll want to fight on, the ultimate decision will lay with his parent club.

“I think Dave will probably want to scrap on but I need to speak to him once he has had that diagnosis to see where we go from there. Obviously his parent club Reading will want to know what’s going on."

Coventry face tough matches against Sunderland and Portsmouth in their run in, as well as a trip to Doncaster Rovers on the final day of the season.

The Verdict

Losing Tom Bayliss is perhaps the final blow to their slim hopes of promotion. A win yesterday would have given them a chink of light to head towards, but with key injuries as well it looks a huge ask.

With Sunderland and Portsmouth left to play, they'll have to be content with their achievements this season and move on to the next with renewed hope.
