Coventry City are closing in on the signing of Bristol City midfielder Kasey Palmer.

According to Bristol Live, the playmaker is set to sign with the Sky Blues despite an underwhelming campaign under Nigel Pearson.

The 25-year old only featured once from the start in the league all season and hasn’t played a Championship game since October 19.

Mark Robins’ side finished five places and nine points above City in the table last term.

But this would complete a transfer window goal for the Robins, who were hoping to sell Palmer in order to reduce the total wage bill at the club.

There is reportedly no transfer fee involved in this deal to take the player to Coventry.

Palmer had originally been linked with a move to Cardiff City, but talks broke down last month.

That had concerned the club that the Jamaican would have to report to pre-season training despite not being part of Pearson’s plans for the next campaign.

Palmer has spent four seasons at Ashton Gate where he has made 69 league appearances, with only 30 of those coming from the start.

The Verdict

This is an unusual signing for Coventry to make considering just how far down the pecking order the midfielder has been at Bristol City.

But the Sky Blues have a recent history of shrewd signings in the market so perhaps they believe Palmer still has a lot to offer a top Championship side.

City will be happy to have removed Palmer’s wages from their budget, which could free up funds elsewhere to make a signing.

However it is certainly a strange situation for a player who has played so few minutes to make a move up the football pyramid like this.
