During the 2018/19 campaign Luton Town put in one of the most impressive performances seen in League One for many years.

Having just won promotion from the fourth tier, they would have been forgiven for taking it easy and establishing themselves, but that was clearly not their intention.

Under Nathan Jones they started brightly, asserting themselves in the upper reaches of the table and even when he departed for Stoke City they did not falter, going on to claim the title under the guidance of Mick Harford.

The Championship awaited them, finalising an exceptional run that saw them rise from the National League into the second-tier of English football in such a short space of time.

Now, however, they look likely to return to League One at the first time of asking, six points from safety with just nine matches left to play. Although you can bet they will not be giving up until it is all decided.

Confidence was certainly high after their opening game of the season.

A thrilling 3-3 draw with Middlesbrough at Kenilworth Road announced their return and, in front of the Sky cameras, made the rest of the league sit up and take notice of them too.

Here is what the fans had to say after the result...

It is safe to say that they will not be winning promotion to the Premier League as some fans appeared to suggest following the match but there is no doubt that the fight they showed in that match will give them confidence of getting out of their current predicament.

The main emotion following that draw was pride and it is unlikely that pride will have dwindled in recent months.

They only have Leeds and Preston to play from the current top six in their run-in and they may be quietly confident that the spirit at the club will be enough to see them out of danger.

Even if it does not, fans will surely still be proud of how far the team has come in such a short space of time. Sure, they will be disappointed to go down, but the pride will remain.
