Sunderland have been credited with interest in signing Rotherham United defender Clark Robertson in recent weeks, according to Football Insider.
Robertson is out of contract with the Millers at the end of the 2020/21 season, and it seems as though he’s heading for the exit door at the New York Stadium .
The defender has been with the Yorkshire-based side since 2018, but looks set to depart following their relegation into League One this term.
Robertson made 16 appearances for Paul Warne’s side this season, and could potentially be tempted by a move to the Stadium of Light this summer.
Sunderland are set to take on Lincoln City in their play-off semi-final, as they look to win promotion back into the Championship.
Aberdeen, Blackpool and Fleetwood Town are also rumoured to be interested in a deal to sign Robertson, and it remains unclear as to which club is leading the race to land his signature.
Speaking in an interview with Football Insider, former Sunderland forward Kevin Phillips reacted to the club’s rumoured interest in signing Robertson in the summer transfer window, and felt as though it could turn out to be a good addition to Lee Johnson’s side.
“Sunderland’s recruitment has improved a lot recently so any player that comes in, they will have done their homework on him. No stone will be left unturned.
“I think they will want to strengthen down the spine of the team in the summer and a centre-half like him could be a good addition.
“He has a bit of Championship experience as well so it could turn out to be a shrewd signing.”
Which of these eight players never scored a goal for Sunderland?
I think this could prove to be a decent signing for Sunderland.
Robertson has shown that he can perform to a relatively high standard in the Championship, having played for Rotherham United at this level in recent seasons.
The defender is out of contract at the end of the 2020/21 season as well, so on a free, this could be an excellent signing for Sunderland.
Depth in Sunderland’s defence is certainly needed as well, with Dion Sanderson set to return to Wolves from his loan spell at the Stadium of Light.
If he can stay injury-free, then the Black Cats will be delighted with any potential agreement for the defender.
