James Morrison could be a free agent this summer based on whether West Brom decide to take up the option on his contract.

The Baggies finished in last place after a disastrous spell under Alan Pardew, which was partially resurrected under Darren Moore. This means they are joining former manager Tony Pulis in the Championship.

Pulis took Middlesbrough to the play-offs after taking over in December. However, Villa proved to be too much for them with a 1-0 victory on aggregate.

Morrison barely featured for West Brom with four league appearances due to serious issues with his achilles. This meant his playing time only came under Pulis. His limited playing time means there is only a small sample size to judge him on, but his numbers are impressive.

The 32-year-old scored one goal as well as averaging one shot per game, so he had a 25% conversion rate. His passing is his most effective area, though, due to how efficient he was with it. He averaged 0.8 key passes from 22 passes per game with an overall success of 87.5%, so he was recycling possession effectively as well as creating openings.

Morrison is a player that Pulis knows well, so potentially getting him on a free could be a bargain. He could provide the drive and goal threat they need from midfield with his experience as well as his proven quality being pivotal.

His time under Pulis as well as at Boro previously means it wouldn't take long for him to settle in, so he could have an important short-term impact in a well-drilled side. Tight margins separated Middlesbrough from a place in the play-off final, so a few changes could be all they need to succeed.
