The three divisions were renamed the Championship, League One and League Two in 2004 as a way of separating it from the Premier League and it has had a number of different sponsors over the years.

The most recent change in name was when the sponsorship rights were handed over to Sky Bet from nPower. However, should talks progress how Harvey expects them too, then the Football League’s their divisions could change their name before the 2016/17 season.

Harvey feels that now is a good time for the Football League to be rebranded after building a good reputation, particularly in recent seasons.

“We felt we needed to undertake this debt and at this stage, where the Football League is strong, to build on that base, rather than look to cover up any shortcomings.”

The move could be financially beneficial as changing the the image of the Football League could attract new sponsors who are willing to back the Championship, League One and League Two.
