Sheffield United have made a magnificent start to the Sky Bet Championship season, with Chris Wilder’s side looking like they will be in contention for back-to-back promotions later in the campaign.
The Blades currently sit third in the table, and have the opportunity to move to the top of the Championship table on Friday evening, if they can pick up three points against Leeds United at Elland Road.
That would be an achievement in itself for Wilder’s side, but we believe if Sheffield United are to continue their impressive form and challenge for a Premier League return, additions during the January transfer window will be key.
Of course, Wilder needs to look to add quality not quantity in January, and one player we believe the Blades should be looking to bring to Bramall Lane on a temporary basis is West Ham United’s, Sam Byram, who is finding his opportunities at the London Stadium extremely limited this season.
Byram finds himself behind Pablo Zabaleta in Slaven Bilic’s pecking order, and has made just two Carabao Cup appearances so far this season, with the versatile Hammer in desperate need of first-team football.
Byram would fit perfectly into Wilder’s 3-5-2 formation at Bramall Lane, with the 24-year-old having experience of playing on the right side of midfield and the right side of defence.
Sheffield United have had to deal with injuries to George Baldock and Kieron Freeman recently, with Wilder faced with a selection dilemma at right wing-back.
Byram would add to the competition for places on the right side at Bramall Lane, whilst also bringing plenty of experience, having previously made 130 Championship appearances for Leeds United.
It would certainly be an ambitious move to bring Byram back to the Championship on-loan, but Wilder has not been afraid of making bold decisions during his time at Bramall Lane. If the Blades have ambitions of the Premier League, bringing players of Byram’s quality to South Yorkshire will be key.
