On transfer deadline-day, fans of Sheffield Wednesday could not be blamed for questioning the management team at Hillsborough.

Boss Carlos Carvalhal had allowed prolific striker Sam Winnall to spend a season-long loan with direct promotion rivals Derby County, albeit with playmaker Jacob Butterfield coming in the other direction.

Sections of the support had pleaded for Winnall to be afforded more opportunities at the club following his January move from Barnsley, but the 26-year-old was never afforded the opportunity to shine at the club, and joins the Rams, hoping to reignite his career.

Winnall was absolutely deadly at both Barnsley and Scunthorpe before that, smashing 63 goals in three and a half seasons, before earning a dream move to the Owls.

What undid Winnall at the former Premier League regulars however was the competition at the club, and the sheer number of strikers vying for a starting spot in the Portuguese boss’ side.

Gary Hooper, Steven Fletcher, Fernando Forestieri and Jordan Rhodes were just some of the big names Winnall had to overcome, and the sheer volume of players simply left no room for the player.

Winnall will go on to Derby and probably score for fun, but despite the disappointment in his departure, could his leaving be a blessing in disguise?

Carvalhal undoubtedly had too many options, and the constant chopping and changing of his front-line to allow for rotation stifled any chance of players forming partnerships, and settling into the side.

With Winnall out of the equation, Carvalhal has one less selection headache, but must now be clear and concise in regard to who his starting men are.

Consistency has restricted Wednesday in the past, with challenges for the top two falling apart in the latter stages of seasons.

Choose starts and stick with them, and Carvalhal could find a winning formula this term.

Wednesday fans, should you have kept Winnall this summer?
