Football League World's Charlton Athletic fan pundit Robert Smith has urged the club to try and sign Peterborough United striker Ivan Toney during the January transfer window.

Football Insider reported that the Addicks were interested in the 23-year-old back in the summer, seeing a £4million bid for the striker rejected, but Smith is keen to see the striker at the Valley.

"If they feel they can afford it I’d be all for having another go," the regular punter told Football League World.

"But not as a direct replacement for Lyle Taylor.

"I think more than a few eyebrows we’re raised in the summer (at the rumours), one because we haven’t spent £4million on a player in over 10 years and Bowyer confirming he Toney was not a lined up replacement for Taylor, which was quite remarkable considering the incumbent owner reputation for stringent spending.

"Lyle Taylor and Ivan Toney as a pairing up top could really be the difference from a good season and a great season on our return to this level."

The former Northampton Town and Newcastle United man has netted nine goals already in League One this season, following on from his impressive 16 goal haul in the last campaign.

With star Addicks man Taylor continuing his spell on the sidelines, it is likely that Bowyer will move to strengthen his front-line in the January window.

However, with Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony insisting that the striker is not for sale, it is likely to take a huge offer to prise him away from London Road.

Charlton currently sit in tenth place with 11 matches played this season as they head into the international break, with Taylor sitting top of the scoring charts with five goals.
