After securing their promotion to the Premier League, Aston Villa will now be looking to strengthen their squad to top-flight standards.
A 2-1 win against Derby County at Wembley ended their three-year stay in the second-tier and it is now expected to be a busy summer for Dean Smith and co.
They appear to mean business too if recent rumours are to be believed.
According to the Sun, the club are ready to bid £20million for Stoke City and England goalkeeper Jack Butland this summer with Smith looking to add some Premier League experience to his side.
But what should we make of this?
Tackling today’s six-point opinion is Louie Chandler…
Do they need him?
“I am not convinced they do.
“If they can get him, great. Butland is obviously a very good goalkeeper and would probably be welcomed by most Premier League sides.
“But Steer gave a very good account of himself towards the end of last season so I would stick with him for now and save some money.”
What are the main benefits of him arriving?
“I suppose his ability.
“Butland is regularly in the England squad and has proven himself to be an excellent, Premier League standard goalkeeper.
“Steer, Nyland and Kalinic are yet to be tested at that level and there are no guarantees they will adapt to it.”
What are the main drawbacks?
“It could prove a waste of resources.
“Even though Villa have plenty of money available to them following their promotion, it still seems like a bit of a waste when there are positions in the team that still need to be strengthened far more.
“The full-backs are a particular area of weakness and with Tammy Abraham not guaranteed to come back again, a Premier League standard striker will also be required.”
Is £20million a fair price?
“It is not unreasonable by any means.
“I think it is a lot to pay by Villa considering that a goalkeeper is far from a priority position for them to strengthen in but from Stoke’s end it is more than fair.
“They will be keen to bring in a handsome amount for his services in order to help fund their own business this summer.”
Is there a better target out there?
“Probably not. Especially in terms of realism.
“Perhaps bringing in a cheaper, proven Premier League goalkeeper to play back-up to Steer would be a wiser move and a better one in the context.
“But, if Dean Smith wants to sign a top goalkeeper, there is not a better choice out there.”
Will it happen?
“I actually think it might.
“With Adam Davies rumoured to be arriving at Stoke and Nathan Jones likely to want to carry out a fair bit of transfer business of his own, I think an agreement can be reached.
“I would back the Potters to get whatever they want for him, however.”
