Sheffield United are fielding fresh interest in Aaron Ramsdale from Arsenal, according to a report from The Sun.

Bernd Leno could well be on the move out of the Emirates this summer, with this report suggesting that Ramsdale could be a goalkeeper Mikel Arteta targets to replace him.

However, Sheffield United value the 23-year-old around the £20m mark, which is a hefty sum for the England international after relegations with Bournemouth and the Blades across the last two Premier League seasons.

Our writers discuss the potential of Ramsdale to Arsenal…

Sam Rourke

He'd be a good addition for back-up, but to replace Bernd Leno? I'm not so sure.

The 23-year-old is clearly very talented and has showcased at Bournemouth and Sheffield United that he has the ability to cut it at the top-level.

However, he has nowhere near the experience that Leno has and if the Gunners were to replace him, they'd surely need to bring in someone with a higher calibre and whom has pedigree at European level.

As aforementioned though, Ramsdale would be a decent number two for Arsenal and someone who could compete for a starting berth, but it'd be a bold move for Arteta's side to bring him in and utilise him as the number one.

Ramsdale offers excellent reflex save ability, a strong aerial presence and commands the back-line ahead of him, and in truth, it's not a surprise he's reportedly on the north London clubs shortlist.

But, there are other keepers out there who would be better served at the Emirates right now in my eyes.

This would be a step in the wrong direction for me.

While he did look good at Bournemouth, I can't say I've been at all impressed by Ramsdale over the past season and I think he's highly overrated.

There are better young English keepers around and it's shocked me that he's part of Gareth Southgate's squad.

I don't think he's an improvement on Leno or the answer for the Gunners long term.

There have to be better options out there because I think spending £20 million on Ramsdale could make Arsenal a laughing stock.

This would be a shrewd signing by the Gunners if they pulled it off this summer.

Ramsdale was one of the few players to come away with any credit to their name from the 2020/21 Sheffield United

Arsenal certainly need a solid backup option between the posts, and Ramsdale would be just that, and he's more than capable of challenging Bernd Leno for his starting spot at the Emirates Stadium next season - providing he stays, of course!

At the age of 23, he's still got his best years ahead of him, and it'll be interesting to see whether he'd be keen on a move to Arsenal, as there wouldn't be any guarantee of a regular starting spot in Mikel Arteta's side unless the move for Leno materialises.

But for a young English talent that has experience of playing in the Premier League already, this would be a solid signing for the Gunners this summer.
