Rafa Benitez' signing of Dwight Gayle from Crystal Palace in the summer of 2016 was absolutely inspired, with the striker playing a huge part in the Magpies' return to the Premier League.

But the 27-year-old has struggled to find his feet since returning to the Premier League scoring six league goals last season.

Having topped the Championship top scorers' table in 2016/17, however, there is no doubt that Gayle is a top performer in the second tier.

One club who could look to bring him in is West Brom, with the Baggies already having a loan offer for the forward rejected.

Having been relegated from the Premier League last season, Darren Moore will be hoping to replicate Newcastle's 2016/17 season and bounce back comfortably to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

So would Gayle be a good signing for the Baggies?

We discuss...

George Dagless

He'd be class.

He's a proven Championship goal-scorer and is the sort of player that gets you promoted.

Definitely worth a look.

Jay Williams

This could well be the signing of the summer if West Brom can pull it off.

Gayle guarantees goals in the Championship, scoring 23 in just 34 games to fire Newcastle to the title in 2016/17 with his fox-in-the-box poacher style of play.

The 28-year-old is not Newcastle's first choice and the Magpies want Salomon Rondon so I can see a potential swap deal going ahead here.

Louie Chandler

Undoubtedly a brilliant signing.

Gayle proved just how good he is at this level with Newcastle and would give a massive boost to West Brom's already decent promotion chances.

I would be slightly surprised if he was willing to drop out of the Premier League again, however.

If Dwight Gayle believes he might not be in favour to be first choice striker at Newcastle this season, then this deal could be one that suits all parties involved.

With Rondon likely to leave before the end of the window, a new striker is a must for West Bromwich Albion, and the pace and trickery of Gayle could prove to be a very attractive trait in the Championship.
