‘Could be the man to take us back to the top’ – These Leeds United fans had every right to be excited about this major appointment

After yet another frustrating season in the Sky Bet Championship which culminated in a 13th place finish, Leeds United were searching a new manager to replace Paul Heckingbottom at the end of the 2016/17 campaign.

The Whites, who had won just four league games in 2018, were looking to put another bitterly disappointing campaign behind them and finally secure promotion back up to the Premier League, after spending far too many years out of the top flight.

Here, in this FLW Rewind, we take a look at Leeds fans’ reactions to when Marcelo Bielsa was appointed United’s new head coach…

Bielsa’s experience spoke for itself – he may have never managed in England before, but having managed some massive clubs in the likes of Lazio, Athletic Bilbao and Marseille, the 63-year old was clearly an appointment that caught the eye.

Naturally, Leeds fans were excited at this appointment – it wasn’t even Leeds fans that expressed their delight at the appointment, with fans of Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur also massively praising the Argentine, who was labelled by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola as the “best coach in the world”.

Fast forward six months, and Leeds fans have been proven to be absolutely right. Bielsa has been a revelation at Elland Road, and is definitely one of the best managers they have had at the club in many a year.

His attractive brand of football has breathed new life into Elland Road, and his unique, refreshing personality has made even the bitterest of rivals force a smile at some of his most questionable antics.

With almost three months of the season left, Leeds, unlike in recent years, remain well in the hunt for promotion back to the Premier League, but without the stress of the play-offs, and this time through automatic promotion.

Having been linked with Premier League side Everton in recent times, it shows just how good of a job Marcelo Bielsa has done at Elland Road…
