Aston Villa defender Tommy Elphick is close to sealing a loan move to Jaap Stam's Reading, according to Sky Sports.

The former AFC Bournemouth centre-back has struggled to hold down a regular starting spot in Steve Bruce's side, so a loan move seems like the right option for all parties.

Is this a wise move by Villa?

I’m surprised they didn’t get rid of him sooner.

Villa needed outgoings to free up wages to get players in on loan and they will see Axel Tuanzebe as an upgrade on Elphick at the back.

They are not strengthening a promotion rival so it’s a move that makes total sense.

George Dagless

I'm a bit surprised actually.

The defender is a decent player and I think in recent weeks he proved that he's still go something to give Villa.

They look a bit short at the back if he goes and so they'll hope that this one doesn't come back to bite them.

Alfie Burns

I get the club have just brought Axel Tuanzebe to Villa Park on-loan, but I wouldn’t be getting rid of Elphick.

Prior to the New Year, Bruce put some faith in the defender, which for me was repaid with some solid performances.

Villa have the cover without Elphick, but I thought the defender might’ve just opened a door for more of an opportunity.

Adam Simeoni

It’s hardly a surprise to see Villa let Elphick go given his lack of opportunities this season, but this could be one Steve Bruce lives to regret.

A couple of injuries at the back and Villa could be in trouble, so I’m surprised Bruce didn’t hold onto the player until the end of the season given their push for promotion in the coming months.

Chris Gallagher

It's the right move.

The arrival of Tuanzebe means Bruce has cover at centre-back and Elphick isn't needed.

The ex-Bournemouth man isn't someone Bruce has trusted since he took over so it makes sense to let him go.

A good move for all parties.
