Aston Villa continued their impressive form of late with a satisfying 2-0 victory away to relegation candidates Wigan Athletic, with both goals coming in the final 20 minutes of play at the DW Stadium.

Steve Bruce’s side had a cagey opening 45 minutes as Latics striker Omar Bogle should have put the hosts ahead having rounded Villa goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

Although the visitors did eventually take the advantage through defender James Chester, whom headed past Wigan ‘keeper Matt Gilks in the 73rd minute.

They doubled their lead ten minutes after when Scott Hogan got his head on the end of a Albert Adomah cross to ensure all three points were heading back to the Midlands.

Aston Villa have now won five of their last six outings and closed the gap with the play-offs to eleven points; that victory means they remain in the top-half on 51 points, alongside Barnsley and Cardiff City.
