Derby County are among a plethora of clubs eyeing a move for Sheffield Wednesday striker Steven Fletcher, who looks set to depart Hillsborough this summer, as per TeamTalk.

Would the Scottish striker be a good addition for the Rams though? Is he needed at Pride Park?

This would be a smart bit of business by the Rams if they can reach an agreement to sign Fletcher.

He’s already shown that he can score goals at this level with Sheffield Wednesday, and I think the Owls would be struggling to survive in the second tier without him.

Derby need a player that is going to score them 20+ goals in a season, and I firmly believe that Fletcher would be more than capable of firing them into the top-six if they were in the Championship next season.

With his rumoured arrival at Derby, it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see Chris Martin heading for the exit door, and potentially one other striker, as Phillip Cocu already has a number of strikers at the club to pick from.

He’s exactly the type of player that Derby should be targeting in the summer, especially if they’re looking to win promotion in the near future.

I think this could be a very impressive move by the Rams.

Fletcher has shown his quality over the past few years and despite being 33, he still looks like someone with a fair bit to offer.

Swooping in for him on a free transfer would be an excellent bit of business and a fantastic start to the summer transfer window.

Cocu does have some interesting strikers but no one has really cemented their place as first choice, so bolstering his options make sense.

Fletcher has been a hugely important player for Sheffield Wednesday this season, scoring some crucial goals despite spending a frustrating spell on the sidelines through injury.

Whether he'd fit in at Pride Park is another question. Chris Martin is a similar type of player to Fletcher, and Phillip Cocu will need to be on the lookout for his replacement should he leave this summer.

Whilst Derby have plenty of youngsters coming through the ranks and Cocu is a big advocate of youth, the addition of Fletcher could be beneficial as it adds another experienced professional to the group, to help the youngsters along.

He's approaching the latter stages of his playing career unfortunately, but even a one-year deal wouldn't be too much of a bad decision for Derby as they look to ignite a push for promotion next term.
