Watford enjoyed the ideal start to life back in the Championship as they beat Sheffield United 1-0 on Monday night.

New boss Rob Edwards will have been delighted with the display, particularly as he still has areas of the squad that he needs to address.

Perhaps the biggest priority is right wing-back, with left-sided Hassane Kamara having to fill in on the opposite flank against the Blades, and whilst he did well, they do need a specialist.

Therefore, strong links to Manchester United's Ethan Laird are encouraging, with the youngster seemingly set for another loan spell away from Old Trafford.

And, Hornets fan pundit Justin Beattie explained to FLW why Laird would be the perfect addition to the group.

"I would be very surprised if it's not a done deal. We do need someone in that right wing-back role. At the moment we've got Hassane Kamara who is a left-footed player playing in that role, he needs to be switched back over to the other side.

"So we definitely need someone in that position. We need someone with good energy, we need more energy going forward, more pace getting forward.

"He did well on loan with Swansea before joining Bournemouth in January, so I think this could be a very good signing for us, and I think a lot of United fans aren't going to be very happy either because I think they hoped he would push Wan-Bissaka and Dalot."

The verdict

As mentioned above, this is an area of the pitch that Watford desperately need to strengthen and Laird would seem to be ideally suited to Watford.

Firstly, he has played as a wing-back all last season and his energy and quality down the right flank would give the team another dimension when they get forward.

So, you would expect this to get done and Laird is likely to become a key player for the Hornets as they push for promotion this season.
