Birmingham City are reportedly considering a move for free agent full-back Marvin Zeegelaar, as per BirminghamLive.

The Dutchman has been a free agent since departing Serie A side Udinese in the summer upon the expiry of his contract there.

Zeegelaar is likely best known in England from his time at Watford, where he made a total of 13 appearances for the Hornets.

With the above in mind, below, three of our FLW writers have offered their verdict on the Zeegelaar to Blues links.

Considering Birmingham’s desperation to add a recognised left-sided defender to their ranks, this could be an okay solution.

The 32-year old isn’t the long-term ideal of what this team will need to cover that position going forward.

But the former Watford man could fill in the gap for the remainder of the season, with finances clearly still being juggled at St. Andrew’s.

It won’t be the most exciting addition of the window, but could be the dependable figure the squad needs in that area to get by until the summer.

His lack of game time in the last year will be a concern, but if he can hit the ground running and slot into the side without any issues then he will prove to be a successful signing.

This does feel like it could be a rather useful signing for Birmingham if they can get it done.

Zeegelaar's versatility is something that could certainly be useful for the Blues, with his ability to play in a variety of positions something that you feel ought to help in a squad that is arguably lacking in depth in certain positions.

With John Eustace's side going through a difficult run at the minute, you also feel that the experience the 32-year-old has of playing at a high level of football, could be helpful in terms of getting them out of the situation they are in.

Meanwhile, the fact he is available as a free agent could also be helpful for Birmingham from a financial perspective, given the ongoing off-field uncertainty around the club's ownership, means it feels hard to know just how much is available in terms of funds for signings this month.

I think given the shortage in the position they have this wouldn't be a bad acquisition for the Blues.

Zeegelaar is obviously well-travelled and approaching the latter stages of his career but could still do a job at this level.

He has a lot of experience of top-flight football throughout his career and only a couple of season ago he was featuring somewhat regularly in the Italian top flight.

On a free transfer and short term deal, there is little risk considering the potential upside and if the club cannot afford any other targets in this position, they should pursue a move for Zeegelaar.
