Millwall are said to be one of two Championship clubs interested in signing Charlie Cresswell on loan from Leeds United.

That’s according to the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Graham Smyth, with the England youth international potentially heading for his first loan away from Elland Road.

Cresswell, 19, is very highly-rated at Elland Road, yet he’s down the pecking order as fifth choice and Leeds seem like they want to push the teenager in 2022/23.

So, is Millwall and linking up with Gary Rowett a good move?

Our writers take a look:

With Dan Ballard potentially heading elsewhere next season following a successful loan spell with the Lions in 2021-22, Gary Rowett needs to have alternative centre-backs on his shopping list.

And with some Premier League experience under his belt last season, Cresswell is probably due a stint playing regular football in the second tier of English football.

Having become somewhat of a regular for England's under-21's recently, Cresswell needs all the game-time he can get to keep on developing.

There's no reason why he couldn't slot straight in at The Den in Rowett's back three and be a very solid addition - Millwall aren't known for leaking lots of goals and a season at the Lions could really enhance Cresswell's reputation.

This is a move that suits all parties.

Firstly, it's an area of the pitch that Millwall need to strengthen as Dan Ballard has returned to Arsenal following his successful loan spell and needs to be replaced.

For Cresswell, he's fifth choice at Leeds, so the player and the club would prefer him to go out and play regularly to help his development. So, this is the sort of deal that you can see happening and it's one that could be ideal for Cresswell.

Gary Rowett's sides are usually strong defensively and whilst Millwall will benefit from having the England U21 international, it's also the sort of club that can help take his game up a level. A loan would also allow the Lions to use whatever funds they do have to strengthen other areas.

This could be a smart addition for Millwall and it would continue their productive start to the window.

It’s a move where there’s a lot to like, for all parties really.

Millwall need some more depth at centre back with Daniel Ballard moving on and Cresswell has a similar profile to the Arsenal man.

He’s got a great reputation at Elland Road and in his time playing in the Premier League he’s looked assured and commanding. There’s not really much doubt that he will be able to handle the Championship.

Cresswell and Leeds will also look at Ballard and see that Millwall is a good place for the 19-year-old’s development. If they can repeat that trick, they’ll have some very happy counterparts at Elland Road.

The thing Leeds are looking for overall is Cresswell to get a chance of first team football and leave himself in a position to move ahead of Diego Llorente or Robin Koch in the pecking order.

This does look like a move that’s going to give him that chance.
