Blackburn Rovers have enquired about the availability of midfielder Glenn Whelan following his release from Aston Villa, the Lancashire Telegraph have reported.

Whelan made 36 league appearances for Villa this season as they were promoted to the Premier League following a 2-1 victory over Derby in the Championship play-off final at Wembley, but the midfielder has since been released by the Midlands side.

Rovers manager Tony Mowbray is thought to be keen to add some experience to what he believes is a promising young side, and appears to believe that Whelan is one who could offer that to his squad.

The Lancashire side are not the only ones interested in Whelan, with The Stoke Sentinel reporting that Stoke - for whom Whelan made 338 appearances in all competitions during a nine year spell before moving to Villa in the summer of 2017 - are interested in bringing the 35-year-old back to the bet365 Stadium.

So, would Whelan be a good signing for Blackburn?

We put that question to some of our Football League World writers.

Kealan Hughes

"He could be a really useful signing for Blackburn.

"He showed that he can still do a job while at Aston Villa, and I think he would suit Blackburn, but only in the short-term.

"He has attributes which would suit any club at this level, particularly his tough tackling and hard working attitude. His experience could also be invaluable to Blackburn's younger players."

Toby Wilding

"This could be a smart move for Rovers.

"Whelan has shown this season that he can still compete at Championship level, and his experience could be invaluable to potential 21-year-old central midfield partner Lewis Travis, who has shown a huge amount of promise since breaking into Rovers' side in January.

"With Whelan also available on a free transfer, there seems to be a number of benefits to this potential deal."

George Brooks

"Whelan would be a great signing for Blackburn - especially on a free transfer.

"He's a very experienced midfielder and showed for Aston Villa last season that he is still a very good player at Championship level.

"Even if he didn't start for Blackburn every week, he'd be a very useful player for Tony Mowbray to have in his squad and would help provide Rovers with some extra strength in depth."
