West Bromwich Albion have made a bid of £2.5million to sign Rotherham United defender Semi Ajayi, according to The Sun (18/07, page 55).

The 25-year-old was one of the standout players for Rotherham last season and scored eight goals in 49 appearances for the Millers in all competitions.

Ajayi played in all 46 games for Rotherham in the Championship last season, but he could not save them from relegation from the second tier.

West Brom head coach Slaven Bilic is looking to put his own stamp on his squad this summer, after taking charge at the Hawthorns last month.

So, would Ajayi be a good signing for West Brom for £2.5million? We discuss...

Toby Wilding

"I can see this being a very good signing for the Baggies.

"Despite Rotherham's struggles last season, Ajayi won plenty of admirers for his individual performances, proving that he is more than capable of competing at Championship level week in, week out.

"Given the departure of Craig Dawson and the recent speculation around the future of Ahmed Hegazi, there does seem to pressure on West Brom to bring in some fresh central defensive options, so a move for Ajayi does seem to be a smart one.

"Given the eye for goal that Ajayi appeared to develop throughout the course of last season, this could be a particularly shrewd piece of business given that the departures of the likes of Jay Rodriguez, Dwight Gayle and Salomon Rondon mean that providing the goals needed to keep Slaven Bilic's side in the hunt for promotion is much more likely to be an all-round team effort this season, rather than relying on the contributions of one or two individuals."

George Dagless

"Very good.

"If they can get him for that fee then they have done a fine job in getting a centre-back that belongs in the Championship at the very least.

"A lot has been made of the lack of attacking options that West Brom have at the club at the moment and that is more than fair enough.

"However, they have also lost numbers defensively and they need to look at that with them proving too leaky last season at key moments.

"Ajayi proved last season he is a real powerhouse, knows how to defend and that he is a threat in the other box so I can see this move working out very well indeed."

Alfie Burns

“I really like the look of this signing, I feel like Ajayi could be a great addition at the Hawthorns.

“He’s got versatility and that can’t be underestimated, particularly when you consider that he can play at centre-back and in midfield, which are areas Albion need to strengthen.

“Even overlooking his impressive goal record, he was comfortably on of Rotherham’s standout players last season and that’s saying something in a struggling side.

“The money quoted isn’t massive and I think the Albion faithful would love what he brings.”
