With reports emerging that Crewe Alexandra are interested in signing former Sunderland and Manchester United defender Wes Brown, Football League World takes a look at whether the 23 cap England international would be a good acquisition for the Cheshire club.

Wes Brown has led an extremely distinguished career, and enjoyed a phenomenal 15 year spell with boyhood club Manchester United, in which the player picked up two Champions League winners medals amongst his 14 honours with the club.

A consistent feature amongst Alex Ferguson’s great sides of the late 90’s and early 00’s, Brown departed Old Trafford for Sunderland in 2011, before a short spell with Blackburn last season.

At the age of 37, Brown is approaching the twilight stages of his long career, and a final swansong in League Two with Crewe could be on the cards.

Crewe gaffer David Artell is keen to bounce back to the third tier, and is building a squad he feels is capable of bossing this division.

The young manager will need experienced heads amongst the youth if he is to guide Alexandra to the top three, and Brown could be a sensible option.

Although the veteran centre back has undoubtedly lost a yard (or two) of pace since his days at the top of the pile with United, the player more than makes up for this with his excellent positioning.

For a former Champions League player, the challenges of League Two will be different and unique, but Brown should be ready to adapt to the demands of the league.

Available on a free, Artell should give Brown a chance at Gresty Road, with the centre half’s quality and experience a worthy addition to Artell’s promotion chasing squad.
