It seems that Oldham Athletic manager John Sheridan performed a minor miracle in League One last season, after keeping his side in the division despite only recording 31 goals across 46 league games.

An impressive defensive record was the ultimate saviour for the Latics, but Sheridan will know that another season of poor showings in front of goal will cost his side a place in the division.

The summer will consist of a search for attacking reinforcements, and the former Plymouth Argyle boss will scour the country in search of goals.

Oldham need a proven football league goalscorer, but should consider supplementing this with several young talents with the potential to provide goals.

Young Manchester City forward Ian Carlo Poveda should be considered by Sheridan, with the former Barcelona youngster set for a bright future in the game following a move to Manchester after a spell with Brentford.

The London born player scored 3 times in his first 2 appearances for the youth side at the Etihad, and an impressive first season with the club could see the youngster earn his first taste of first team football through the form of a loan move.

Oldham should ensure that they are at the front of the queue for Poveda, who would seriously excel his development with a spell in League One.

Learning the game in the lower leagues is an important lesson, and Sheridan should look to provide this opportunity to Poveda.

The player has the ability to find the back of the net and the creative instinct to lay on goals, and is exactly what is needed at Boundary Park next season.
