Sunderland should look to sign Exeter City’s Jayden Stockley.
The Mackems are in dire need of reinforcements up front. For a club that needs to keep a close eye on its finances such as Sunderland this presents a problem. Forwards tend to be the most expensive players. However, a raid of League Two could provide Sunderland with a quality finisher at a discount price.
Stockley had an outstanding season. His 19 goals in the regular season fired the Devon side into the play-offs. He proceeded to score the opening goal in the play-off semi-final second leg against Lincoln to help guide them to their second consecutive League Two play-off final.
While Exeter came up short in the end, Stockley can look back on a year of remarkable consistency. At no point did he go more than three games without contributing towards a goal. It followed a successful spell at Aberdeen where, alongside getting European experience, he netted five times and provided two assists despite having just eight starts.
Securing the 24-year-old’s signature will not come for free. He joined the Grecians for a club record fee of around £100,000. Sunderland would need to better that given the season he has just had. Yet this should be manageable. It is not in the same league as the sums that were being thrown around in previous seasons. If Stockley can repeat the regularity with which he was scoring last season, Sunderland would have a real shot at returning to the Championship at the first time of asking.
