Gordon Strachan and Garry Monk are two of the leading contenders to replace Birmingham City boss Steve Cotterill.

The Blues boss has had a very tough time at St. Andrew's and a run of four successive defeats has left his side in the relegation zone. During that time they have lost to local rivals Aston Villa and a crucial relegation battle against Barnsley last time out.

And, according to Press Association Sport, Cotterill could be sacked if Birmingham lose against Nottingham Forest this weekend.

The same report also reveals that Strachan and Monk would be among the favourites to replace the ex-Bristol City manager.

Strachan is out of work since his contract was not renewed with the Scotland national team towards the end of last year, however, he hasn't managed at club level since a poor spell with Middlesbrough in 2010.

Meanhwile, Monk is another ex-Boro boss who lost his job at the Riverside over the festive period, with the north east side failing to live up to pre-season expectations.

Ironically, Birmingham's next game after Forest is against Middlesbrough at home.

The Verdict

Birmingham are in a really poor position and Cotterill can have no complaints if he is sacked should the side lose again.

There are problems from top to bottom at the club so to pin all the blame on the manager would be wrong, however he should still be doing more given the squad he has.

Whilst Strachan may represent a risky move given his time away from club management, Monk would be a strong appointment for a struggling side and surely someone fans would welcome.
