Sunderland midfielder Corry Evans has revealed that his side will be looking to take the game to Sheffield Wednesday in the first-leg of their play-off semi-final.

The Black Cats secured a place in this competition on Saturday by sealing a 1-0 victory over Morecambe in League One.

Sunderland opened the scoring in the 10th minute of this clash as Nathan Broadhead latched on to a pass from Evans before firing an effort past goalkeeper Trevor Carson.

Following the break, Ross Stewart went close to doubling his side's advantage as his deflected effort narrowly missed the target.

Carson then produced a save to deny Patrick Roberts.

Sunderland managed to see out the rest of the game as they sealed a fifth-place finish in the League One standings.

The Black Cats are now set to host the Owls at the Stadium of Light on Friday before making the trip to Hillsborough on May 9th.

Ahead of the first-leg, Evans has revealed what approach Sunderland will take to this particular fixture.

Speaking to the Northern Echo, the Black Cats captain said: "It's two great clubs, and I have to say, first and foremost, it will be a really good occasion.

"We have to take the game to Sheffield Wednesday and try to get through, to get to Wembley."

Evans later added: "Obviously, we'll be looking to get a positive result at home, but we are quite good away from home as well.

"We've shown of late that we can go away and keep clean sheets.

"We're in good form, we're confident, and we believe we can beat anyone in this league with the way we're playing at the minute."

The Verdict

When you consider that both teams have produced a host of impressive performances in the third-tier since the turn of the year, this play-off showdown could turn out to be an enthralling affair.

Whereas Sunderland did manage to secure a 5-0 victory over the Owls at the Stadium of Light earlier this season, they also suffered a 3-0 defeat to Darren Moore's side in November.

Having recorded an impressive WhoScored match rating of 8.02 against Morecambe, it will be interesting to see whether Evans is able to deliver another eye-catching display on Friday.

By adding to the four direct goal contributions that he has provided this season in his side's showdown with Wednesday, the midfielder may be able to help his side secure a win in front of the club's supporters.
