Ex-Leeds United chairman Massimo Cellino is interested in taking over Charlton Athletic, reports The Sun.

An article The Sun newspaper today (pg. 59) claims that the controversial former owner of Leeds is lining-up a return to England. He currently owns Serie A side Brescia but as they continue to struggle, Cellino is understood to be keen on a return to English football.

Cellino's Eleonora Sport Ltd first acquired a controlling stake in Leeds back in 2014, and had 100% control by 2016. He's an ever-controversial figure, overseeing the appointment and sacking of six managers in his time at the club.

That combined with his financial mismanagement made Cellino a highly unpopular figure at Leeds, but would he prove any different with Charlton?

Can you remember which Charlton Athletic manager signed each of these 15 players? Have a go now!

Charlton are a club in turmoil. From starting the Championship season so brightly, to losing all their payers through injury, slipping into a relegation dogfight and realising the lies of their new owners.

East Street Investment's takeover of Charlton at the start of the year looked to have made them one of the wealthiest clubs in the country. But after a continuing back-and-forth between Matt Southall and Tahnoon Nimer, only the latter is left at the club.

Whether or not Nimer will come good remains unknown, but plenty of Charlton fans are expecting the worst.

The verdict

This will only spell bad news for Charlton fans. As if their season couldn't get any worse, their bad luck with owners only seems to intensify their problems. Cellino is just a rumour at the moment though, and given the current state of football, it's unlikely that anyone will be looking to make such a purchase at this time.
