In the hunt for a playoff spot approaching the halfway point of the season, Nottingham Forest manager will be delighted with the way his side have conducted themselves thus far.

Consisting primarily of a core of academy graduates, the Reds have an impressive young side full of potential, and fans will look forward to the future of this golden generation with great hope and expectation.

Although the talented, eager group has looked strong at times this season, their youth has also arguably played against them at times, with a lack of experience costing the side points this term.

Points dropped in winnable games has restricted Warburton's side’s progression up the table, and the former Brentford and Rangers boss may consider turning to the transfer window in January to add much-needed experience to his side.

Warburton loved a bargain in the summer, picking up quality for exceptional prices, and will be keen to repeat this process again in the new year.

With that in mind, he may target these soon to be free agents who could be available in cut-price deals with their contracts set to expire next summer…

James Collins

Having fallen out of favour at West Ham, new boss David Moyes may consider allowing the Welsh defender to leave the club in January in order to make way for new faces.

Collins remains a solid option, and would certainly excel in the second tier despite heading into the latter stages of his career.

The 34-year-old is one of the most experienced players in the Premier League, and the knowledge he could pass on to Forest’s latest generation of stars is unrivalled.

His presence would certainly benefit young Joe Worrall, a centre-half with massive potential.

If Warburton can convince Collins to move to the East Midlands for 18 months, he would have a real gem on his hands.

Ben Hamer

Forest have struggled in the goalkeeping department this season, with summer loan signing Adam Federici ruled out for the season almost immediately through injury.

Young Jordan Smith has assumed the role for the majority of the campaign, but has made a mistake or two along the way.

Forest have conceded regularly this season, and Warburton may decide a more experienced shot-stopper would benefit his side heading into the business end of the season.

Ben Hamer has acted as an excellent back-up to Kasper Schmeichel at Leicester, but at 30-years-old, will know that first team football is a must in the coming months and years.

Hamer would be a wonderful addition to the squad, and with his contract expiring in the summer, he could be available for a great price.

David Meyler

What a signing this would be if Warburton can pull it off.

With Meyler’s contract expiring in the summer, Hull may look to cash in on the player in January, although with a relegation scrap likely, the Tigers will probably look to hold onto the Irish international.

Impressing in a poor Hull side, Meyler has been consistent throughout his career, and at the age of 28, is at the height of his powers.

A fantastic addition to the Forest midfield, a partnership with Ben Osborn and Liam Bridcutt would provide Warburton’s side with an incredibly strong core.
