It is safe to say the 2017/18 Championship season hasn’t gone exactly to plan for Birmingham City.

Appointing Harry Redknapp towards the end of last season, the former Tottenham manager accepted terms on a one-year deal in the summer, and was handed a substantial transfer budget to ensure the Blues were transformed into promotion candidates.

It did not quite work out, and Redknapp was sacked very early into the season.

Steve Cotterill took over last month, but things have not greatly improved since the former Nottingham Forest boss’ appointment.

January could prove to be huge for the club, with the transfer window sure to be utilised in the new year.

Having invested heavily in the summer however, Birmingham’s Chinese owners may be more cautious in their approach to this window, and Cotterill may have to navigate the market shrewdly, picking up bargains along the way.

Targeting players with contracts expiring in the summer could be an option, and these three should be on Cotterill’s wishlist…

Lasse Vibe

Could the Blues return to Brentford once again in January?

Bees fans will hate it, but it is a distinct possibility.

With Jota, Harlee Dean and Maxime Colin all heading to St Andrew’s in the summer, the Blues could return to West London for Lasse Vibe.

The striker is back amongst the goals following a brace at QPR, and with his contract expiring in the summer, Cotterill may view the Danish international as the man to bring the goals to the West Midlands.

Birmingham have a horrific record in front of goal that needs addressing, and the Dane could be the answer.

Ben Watson

Birmingham have certainly lacked leaders in the middle of the park this season, and Watson could be the perfect addition to the squad.

The 32-year-old is vastly experienced with a winning mentality having tasted FA Cup success with Wigan Athletic, and Cotterill could be keen to add such a player to his squad.

Watson’s chances at Watford have been massively limited this year, and as he reaches the latter stages of his career, the player will know that first team football is essential.

Whether Watson would wish to become involved in a relegation battle remains to be seen, but at least Cotterill could promise the player regular action.

Billy Bodin

Birmingham are in desperate need of goals, and what better man to provide them than League One’s top scorer?

Bodin has scored for fun in the third tier, and has impressed despite the Gas struggling in the league this season.

The Swindon-born forward has an excellent record since moving to the club in 2015, inspiring his side to promotion from League Two during his time in the West Country.

The 25-year-old appears ready to make the step up to the next level, and with Birmingham struggling, the player will certainly be worth a punt in January.
