Having seen both Jordan Pickford and Vito Mannone depart the Stadium of Light in recent months, Sunderland are desperately on the search for goalkeeping reinforcements, and are reportedly in negotiations with trialist, Robbin Ruiter, over terms ahead of the new campaign.

Derby are the visitors on Friday as Sunderland begin their return to the Championship, and boss Simon Grayson will be keen to ensure Ruiter is on the books and registered by the time the game rolls around.

The 30-year-old has proven a loyal servant during his eight-year professional career, representing just two sides in his native Netherlands.

The massive 6 foot 5 inch shot stopper left Utrecht earlier this year having made 137 appearances in five years at the club since joining from Volendam, and securing a move to England at this stage in his career would mark an excellent progression of his career.

Ruiter made just 15 outings for Utrecht last last year as the club qualified for the Europa League play-off rounds, but stepping into the Championship will offer new challenges to the experienced keeper.

The division is extremely combative and competitive, and Ruiter will have to be at his very best if he is to inspire Sunderland to a place in the top six.

If Ruiter signs, he will come to this country largely unknown, and with the advantage of anonymity, expectations may be slightly lower than a British signing.

However, he will have to maintain his form throughout the season if he is to fend off the ravenous British Press and the wrath of Black Cats fans, and time will tell whether the player can manage the weight of expectation with the global eye firmly placed upon him.

Will Ruiter do for now or should Grayson seek other targets?
