Charlton Athletic forward Conor Washington has admitted that he is hoping to enter contract negotiations with the club in the coming months.

The forward's current deal at The Valley is set to expire next summer and he has yet to be offered fresh terms by the Addicks.

Charlton, who still haven't appointed a permanent successor for Nigel Adkins, are set to face Gateshead in the second round of the FA Cup this evening.

Washington will be keen to build upon his recent upturn in form by scoring in this particular fixture.

The Northern Ireland international has managed to find the back of the net in four of his last five appearances for Charlton and thus will be brimming with confidence heading into tonight's clash.

Making reference to his future ahead of this game, Washington has admitted that he is keen to extend his stay at the club but has yet to enter discussions with the Addicks over a new deal.

Speaking to the South London Press about his current situation at Charlton, the forward said: "It’s never a nice situation as a footballer, coming towards the end of your contract.

“But I’m enjoying playing here – especially under Jacko [caretaker boss Johnnie Jackson].

"It’s probably as good a rapport that I’ve had with any set of fans.

"I know I’ve still got to score more goals.

"That’s not something I’m going to shy away from.

“It’s a massive club and a proud one for me, to be a part of it.

"My family is settled.

"My little man goes to school next year.

“I’d like to think contract talks would open up in the next couple of months.

"But you never know in football, you have to take each day as it comes."

The Verdict

If Washington continues to deliver the goods on a consistent basis for Charlton in League One, it wouldn't be at all surprising if he is offered a new contract in the not too distant future.

However, any negotiations are likely to be put on hold until the Addicks make a permanent managerial appointment.

Jackson will be looking to stake his claim for the role by guiding Charlton to a great deal of success at this level over the Christmas period.

Currently 15th in the third-tier standings, the Addicks will be aiming to close the gap between them and the play-off places by picking up positive results in their upcoming clashes with Ipswich Town, Cambridge United and Plymouth Argyle.
