Jack Grealish is the best player in the Championship.

That is according to Aston Villa midfielder Conor Hourihane, a teammate of the 23-year-old in a report by the Daily Mail.

The acclaim was levelled at the returning Villa star was after his sensational volley in the dismantling of play-off hopefuls Derby County.

Dean Smith’s men are six points off the top-six after the emphatic win married up with results going their way somewhat.

The hunt is still on and playing as they did at the weekend, it would be no surprise if they indeed were able to sneak over the dotted line come May.

Grealish had been out for three months with a shin problem and announced his return in superlative fashion last weekend.

Hourihane notched a brace in his own return-to-form after being jeered from some home fans this season.

And the Republic of Ireland international spoke after the game about the win and of Grealish’s ability.

“Jack's a fantastic player, probably the best player in the league on his day," Hourihane said.

“He's got fantastic quality.

“Coming back today maybe gave the lads a bit of a lift and a buzz. With that quality, any team is going to improve.

“Now we're all heroes again [After the win].

“We need to be consistent now. There's 11 games to go now, so we need to put a run together now to try and get into that top six.”

The verdict

On his day, Grealish can be quite the handful and goals like he scored at the weekend show what a talent he is.

Villa have been missing the attacker for the last three months, and it has shown in their results.

The best in the division? Might be a stretch but he is Villa’s best, and they rely on him a lot – this past weekend proves it.
