Conor Chaplin sends message to fans after Ipswich Town success

Ipswich Town gained a much needed victory over Shrewsbury Town on Saturday at Portman Road.

Summer signing Conor Chaplin broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute as the Tractor Boys took the lead in each half and held on in the second to win 2-1.

The three points took Paul Cook’s men up to 14th place, building a four point gap ahead of the relegation zone and closing the gap on the play-off places to six points.

In what has been a very difficult start to the season the relief was clear to see from the players at the final whistle with Chaplin opening his account in the league.

The versatile forward took to Instagram to express his emotions after the crucial three points.

He wrote: “+3 and a ⚽️ doesn’t get much better.”

Chaplin came in with a big reputation along with a lot of other players this summer after he played an important role in Barnsley’s run to the play-off semi finals last term. Paul Cook would have been a pull factor in Suffolk having worked with the 24-year-old when he was making his name in senior football at Portsmouth.

Ipswich Town won their only ever top-flight title in what year?

Despite the loss of Bersant Celina to international duty Ipswich produced an assured performance to ease past the Shrews, the game played out more comfortably for the Tractor Boys than the scoreline suggests and Chaplin’s finish got the ball rolling in that respect.

There has been a lot of pressure on Ipswich from the first game of the season due to the household names they brought in over the summer, now looking up after back to back wins Paul Cook and his players can breathe a bit easier and start building confidence as they look to close the six point gap between themselves and the play-off places.
