Sheffield Wednesday snatched a late point at Hillsborough in their first game back in competitive action as they drew 1-1 with promotion-chasing Nottingham Forest.

The Reds took the lead through Joe Lolley midway through the second-half, but on-loan Crystal Palace striker Connor Wickham saw the Owls take a point, as he headed home from close-range in stoppage time.

It means that Wednesday are now sat 15th in the Championship table, and are eight points adrift of the play-off places with eight matches remaining this term.

It'll be frustrating for the Owls, who had previously occupied a spot inside the top-six during the first-half of this year's campaign.

Speaking in a post-match press conference (quotes source from Yorkshire Live), Wickham remained upbeat about Sheffield Wednesday's chances of finishing inside the play-off places, which might come as a surprise to some of the club's supporters.

"We can’t just accept that we want to stay in the league. We have to look up at the teams above, it’s only three or four wins.

"We have to look at the best possible option and that’s getting into the play-offs. If we play like we did (against Forest), then nine times out of 10 we will win."

Wickham went on to admit that his team-mates are in a 'good place physically', and are working hard to put themselves into a better position than they currently find themselves in.

"Maybe the break has done us good. We have come back, the last four weeks, and everyone has worked incredibly hard and we have put ourselves in a good position. We are in a good place physically, we just need the games now."

The Verdict:

I'm surprised to hear that he's talking about the play-offs.

In my eyes, Sheffield Wednesday have already blown their chance of finishing inside the top-six, and I would be stunned if they were able to get anywhere near the play-offs before this year's campaign reaches a conclusion.

Wickham will know that he needs to find some consistency in his performances, especially if Steven Fletcher is to continue struggling with injuries.

The play-offs aren't achievable in my opinion, and the Owls need to focus on just putting together a positive run of results for now.
