Wigan Athletic have today completed the signing of veteran midfielder Darron Gibson on a free, as announced by the club's official website.

The former Manchester United and Sunderland man has joined on a short-term deal as Paul Cook continues to build a squad he thinks will thrive on Wigan's return to the Sky Bet Championship.

The 30-year-old came through the ranks at Manchester United and went on to make 60 senior appearances for the Red Devils across a number of competitions.

He moved to Everton in 2016 after suffering horrific luck with injuries, making just 69 appearances in five years at Goodison Park.

Gibson signed for Sunderland halfway through the Black Cats' doomed Premier League season, before making 15 appearances for the Black Cats in the Championship last season.

He was released by Sunderland back in March, with the Black Cats going on to suffer an inevitable relegation following his departure.

The Verdict

This seems like a very poor signing from Paul Cook, who has otherwise done some good business this summer.

There is no doubt that Gibson still has quality, but he is incapable of staying fit for long enough to show it.

He will simply be a drain on the club's resources and it really is a baffling signing.
