Wigan Athletic have announced the signing of Callum McManaman, with the winger returning to the club on an initial one-year deal.

The 27-year old came through the ranks at the Latics and was a key part of the historic side that won the FA Cup back in 2013.

However, he left two years after that triumph, joining West Brom but he failed to make a positive impact at The Hawthorns.

Another poor spell at Sunderland followed last season, but he has now left the Black Cats, with Wigan confirming on their website that he has signed a one-year deal to rejoin the club on a permanent transfer.

And, manager Paul Cook told the official site that he was delighted to land the player who has a strong bond with the supporters.

"Callum’s connection with this club and our fans is there for all to see, our task is to get him ready and doing what he does best at the DW Stadium."

"I have seen Callum from afar and I am excited about what he can produce; this is a good environment for him to come into because he knows a lot of the players and staff well, which should help him settle in straight away."

The Verdict

McManaman's career has stalled since he left Wigan three years ago but he is a very talented player when he is at his best.

If Cook can help him rediscover that form he will be a major addition for the newly-promoted side as he'll provide them with real class in the final third.

He will hope that returning to a club he knows well can help him find that form.
