West Bromich Albion have confirmed the signing of Scunthorpe United defender Conor Townsend for an undisclosed fee.

In a statement on the West Bromich Albion website, the Baggies announced that the 25-year-old has put pen to paper on a three year deal at the Hawthorns.

The left back signed for Scunthorpe United in January 2016, and has gone on to make 94 appearances for the club.

West Brom manager Darren Moore stated: "This is another good acquisition for us. He's been on our radar for quite a while and I'm delighted we have beaten two other clubs to his signature."

The full back will join up with the rest of the squad ahead of next weeks Championship opener against Bolton Wanderers at the Hawthorns, as he didn't sign in time for today's 5-2 win over Coventry.

Townsend will provide competition in the left full back position to current first choice Kieran Gibbs for this coming season.

The Verdict

The signing of Conor Townsend is a solid one for Darren Moore’s side, as it provides healthy competition for places amongst the squad.

Whilst it is a big step up from League One, Townsend had a good individual campaign for Scunthorpe United last season, and will hope to replicate his achievements.

He will join the likes of Sam Johnstone, Harvey Barnes, Jonathan Bond and Kyle Bartley as the new faces in the squad for this coming season.
