Confirmed: The men who will join Heckingbottom at Leeds

Paul Heckingbottom has completed his move across Yorkshire to join Leeds United from their local rivals Barnsley on an 18-month contract.

He had just signed a new contract at Oakwell but completed the switch regardless and will take some of his staff at Barnsley with him to Elland Road to try and get Leeds United’s promotion push back on track.

A club statement on the club’s official website read: “Heckingbottom will be joined by Jamie Clapham (First Team Coach), Nathan Winder (Head of Sports Science) and Alex Bailey (First Team Performance Analyst) who will also all depart Oakwell immediately.”

That is quite a substantial upheaval for Barnsley to undergo at a crucial stage of the season although it does give the club’s new owners a chance to implement their new ideas, with a clean slate and without the unpopular decision taken to remove the existing coaching staff.

The Verdict

It is vital that a new man, especially one who is undertaking a job as big as the Leeds one, brings his own men, who he has worked with before and can trust, with him.

Heckingbottom will need all the expertise of the men he has worked alongside at Oakwell to move up a level and get Leeds back into the top six.
