Swansea City will be without left-back Martin Olsson for the rest of the season after he ruptured his Achilles in the weekend win over Brentford.

The 30-year-old, who has featured in 17 league games so far this season, was stretchered off in the first-half at Griffin Park and looked in considerable pain.

And, the club confirmed the bad news on their website this afternoon, ruling the Swedish international out for the remainder of the campaign.

They added that Olsson has already undergone surgery following the injury, which was a success, and will now begin the long road to recovery.

He is the third Swansea player in recent years to suffer with this setback, with Nathan Dyer and Leroy Fer both missing many months with a ruptured Achilles.

The news will be a big blow to Graham Potter who has used Olsson regularly this season so far.

The former Ostersunds boss is likely to have to turn to Matt Grimes to fill in at left-back, whilst Declan John is another option.

Swansea ended a three-game losing streak with victory on Saturday and are now 12th in the table, although they are seven points behind the top six.

The Verdict

This is a massive blow for Swansea and for Olsson who you really have to feel sorry for.

He has been an important player this season and is a proven, established player at this level who not only can defend well but also pushes forward.

Now it's a chance for Grimes or John to step in but neither have convinced this season so Potter may look for a new signing for this position when the window opens.
