Swansea City have announced the departure of striker Borja Baston, who will join Alaves on a season long loan deal.

In a statement on the Swansea City website, the club declared that the 25-year-old forward will join the La Liga side Deportivo Alaves this summer.

Borja spent last season on loan at fellow Spanish side Malaga, where the front man made 20 appearances, with over half of those coming off the bench, in a season which saw them relegated to the second tier of Spanish football.

According to the statement, the loan deal is “subject to international clearance”, but is likely to go through with no problem any time soon.

Borja joined Swansea City in the summer of 2016 from Atletico Madrid, and has gone on to 18 appearances for the club, scoring just one goal, which came in a 3-2 defeat to Arsenal under then manager Bob Bradley.

The Verdict

While Borja hasn’t played much of a role for Swansea City since joining the club, following their relegation to the Championship, I am surprised not to see him part of their squad.

Without many top strikers at the club, Borja seemed to be a good fit for the Championship outlet, but yet has been loaned out for yet another season.

With just two years left on his contract, it seems an odd time to send the Spaniard out on a season long loan, as upon his return, will have just a single season left at the club.
